Meet our Board Members & Executive Team
David G. Samuel, Board Chair
Dave joined Birch Hill in 2005. Dave is Chairman of GDI Integrated Facility Services Inc. and also serves on the Board of Directors of Creation Technologies, Sigma Systems and Softchoice. He has also served on the Board of Aquaterra, EISI and was Chairman of Shred-it International. Prior to joining Birch Hill, Dave had over 15 years of experience in private equity, operations, consulting and investment banking. Dave’s experience includes serving as President, Rogers Cable (High Speed Internet Access) and working at McKinsey & Company and Morgan Stanley. Dave received his MBA from Harvard Business School and his HBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business, Western University.
Claude Bigras, Director, President and Chief Executive Officer
Since 1982, Mr. Bigras has spent his career in the construction, janitorial and facility maintenance industry. He joined GDI in 1994 and later became a major shareholder in 1998. Over the years, he has held many positions, and became President and CEO of GDI in December 2004. In his role as President and CEO, Mr. Bigras has overseen GDI’s significant organic growth, leading GDI to become the largest janitorial services company in Canada, and one of the largest in North America. Through his leadership, perspective and experience, Mr. Bigras has driven the development of GDI’s key financial strategic planning, and brings with him an exceptional track record of strategic acquisitions. Mr. Bigras holds certificates in Finance and Management from École des Hautes Études commerciales in Montréal.
Michael Boychuk, Director
Mr. Boychuk has been President and CEO of Bimcor Inc. since 2009. Bimcor is a private sector pension plan manager for the Bell Canada group of companies and is a registered adviser with the Autorité des marchés financiers (Québec) and the Ontario Securities Commission. He was previously a director Yellow Media Inc., Yellow Pages Digital & Media Solutions Limited, Yellow Pages Limited and currently serves as director at Laurentian Bank of Canada. From 1999 to 2009, he was Senior Vice-President and Treasurer of BCE Inc./Bell Canada, being responsible for all treasury, corporate security as well as environment and sustainability activities, and for the BCE Group of companies’ pension plans. Mr. Boychuk is a member of the Board of Governors and Chair of McGill University’s Audit Committee. He also serves on the International Advisory Committee of McGill University’s Faculty of Management, is a member of the Advisory Board of Nunavut Trust and sits on the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation’s Investment Committee. Mr. Boychuk is a graduate of McGill University (Bachelors of Commerce 1977, GDPA 1978, CPA, CA 1979, FCPA, FCA 2012) and has been a professional chartered accountant since 1979. He became a Fellow of the Ordre des comptables professionnels agréés du Québec in 2012.
David A. Galloway, Director
From 1998 to 2002, Mr. Galloway was a member of Bank of Montreal’s board of directors and was appointed Chairman of the board of directors on May 1, 2004. While at the Bank of Montreal, he served on the Risk Review Committee and the Human Resources and Management Compensation Committee. He was also a director of Harris Financial Corp. and served on its Risk Oversight Committee. Mr. Galloway is the former President and CEO of Torstar Corporation, a position he held from 1988 to 2002. He joined Torstar in 1981 and became the President and CEO for Harlequin Worldwide in 1982. Prior to joining Torstar, he was a founding partner of the Canada Consulting Group, a leading strategic management consulting firm that was acquired by the Boston Consulting Group. He has previously served on the following boards: Shell Canada Ltd., Cognos Incorporated, Abitibi-Consolidated, Hudson’s Bay Company, Clearnet Communications Inc., Corel Corporation, Torstar Corporation, Visible Genetics and Westburne Inc. Today, Mr. Galloway is retired but currently sits on the boards of Toromont Industries Ltd. and Scripps Network Interactive, Inc. Mr. Galloway has a bachelor’s degree (Honours) in political science and economics from the University of Toronto and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Murray Leimert, Director
Mr. Leimert has been in the construction and trade services business for over 30 years, having done every job from Apprentice to President. From 2000 to 2005, Mr. Leimert acted in a number of senior operational and internal management roles as part of the fast growing Flint Energy organization. Mr. Leimert was the founding President of Braid Industrial Services, an industrial electrical and instrumentation contractor, from 2005 to 2010. In 2010 he joined Trydor as President, guiding the company through its sale to Wesco Distribution in 2012. Mr. Leimert joined Ainsworth Inc. (‘’Ainsworth’’) as President and COO in 2012, responsible for re-positioning the company as a national skilled trade services company serving the commercial and institutional sectors. Mr. Leimert possesses a Master Electrician Ticket and an Executive Management Program from Queens University. With GDI’s acquisition of Ainsworth in November of 2015, Mr. Leimert has decided to transition out of his role as President and to offer his operational experience as a director on the Board of GDI.
Richard G. Roy, Director
For the past 15 years, Mr. Roy has spent his career at Uni-Sélect Inc., a leader in the automotive aftermarket industry, the fifth-largest automotive parts distributor and largest independent paint distributor in North America. Mr. Roy has occupied an array of executive positions with Uni-Sélect – from 1999 to 2007 he acted as the company’s CFO, from 2007 to 2008 he acted as its Chief Operating Officer and from 2008 on he assumed the position of President and CEO. He also currently sits on the board of directors of Dollarama Inc., the leading dollar store operator in Canada with over 900 stores spanned across the country. Mr. Roy holds a bachelor’s degree from École des Hautes Études commerciales in Montréal and holds FCPA and FCA designations.
Carl M. Youngman, Director
Mr. Youngman is founder, Chairman and CEO of Youngman & Charm, a private equity investment management and consulting firm, and is on the Advisory Board of Schultze Asset Management, LLC, a U.S. based distressed securities manager. For over 30 years he has been helping public and private companies, their managements, investors in companies and lenders to companies resolve their operational and financial problems. Mr. Youngman is an active member of several professional associations and was a founder and former Vice-Chairman of the Turnaround Management Association and holds the designation of Certified Turnaround Professional (CTP) from the Turnaround Management Association and an Executive Master’s degree from The American College of Corporate Directors. Mr. Youngman holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BS in electrical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
Claude Bigras, Director, President and CEO
Mr. Stéphane Lavigne - Senior Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Lavigne is a seasoned financial executive with over 20 years of experience working in senior roles with Canadian public companies. In addition to his finance and capital markets background, Mr. Lavigne brings a skill set that includes IT and systems implementation, operations optimization, business development and strategy.
Jocelyn Trottier, Executive Vice-President of GDI Integrated Facility Services Inc. and President of GDI Services (Quebec) L.P.
Mr. Trottier first joined the team at GDI as Chief Financial Officer from March 2009 to October 2012. He then became the Executive Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer of Kevlar Group Inc., a real estate developer and property manager in Québec. He was also Vice-President, Finance and Administration of a major real estate developer, builder and property manager in the Montreal region specializing in retirement homes. From 1988 to 2000, he was the owner of a consulting firm specializing in the interim management of companies. Throughout his career, he has acquired a multidisciplinary expertise, particularly in the areas of operations management, human and financial resources, and strategic planning. Mr. Trottier rejoins the GDI family as the Executive Vice-President of GDI Integrated Facility Services Inc. and President of GDI Services (Quebec) L.P.
Ahmed Boomrod, Chief Operating Officer, USA
Mr. Boomrod has over 25 years of experience in the facility services industry and oversees GDI’s Great Lakes region in the U.S., along with the Food Sanitation operations across North America. He was the VP of Operations and ran the aircraft services with OMNI, before becoming an owner of the company prior to its merge with GDI. Mr. Boomrod is actively involved with a number of charitable causes internationally.
Robert Crozier, President, Atlantic Region
Mr. Crozier joined GDI in 2011 and is currently the President of its Atlantic Region division. In this role, he oversees all operations in Atlantic Canada and assists GDI’s senior management with respect to ongoing corporate matters. Mr. Crozier began his career with Modern Building Cleaning and has been in the janitorial services industry in Atlantic Canada since 1981. In 1989, Mr. Crozier was named General Manager for Atlantic Building Cleaning, before ultimately purchasing the firm in 1995. Under his guidance and oversight, Atlantic Building Cleaning grew to become the largest janitorial services company in Atlantic Canada, before ultimately being sold to Empire Maintenance and ultimately, to GDI in 2011. Mr. Crozier is a member of the board of directors of RediShred Capital Corp, a publicly traded company for which he previously served as CEO. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Irina Dounaevskaia - Senior VP, Finance - GDI Integrated Facility Services
Irina Dounaevskaia is GDI Services (Canada) LP’s Chief Financial Officer. She is responsible for directing the overall financial policies, including strategic planning, operational accounting, budgeting, banking relations, credit, tax, and cash management. In the fall of 2008, Irina was appointed Senior Vice President, Finance of GDI, upon closing the largest transaction in the history of the building services and facility maintenance industry in Canada, a key milestone in GDI Services (Canada) LP’s expansion strategies. With more than 15 years of accounting and financial management experience, she has held lead accounting positions with a variety of companies. A Certified General Accountant with a MSc. in Engineering, Ms. Dounaevskaia is a member of the Certified General Accountants Association of Ontario.
Fred Edwards, President, Western Region
Mr. Edwards joined the GDI team in 2013 and is currently the President of its Western Region. In this role, he oversees all aspects of operations in the four Western provinces, as well as coordinates efforts with respect to ongoing corporate matters. Mr. Edwards has over 35 years of experience in the janitorial services industry, and prior to joining GDI, he was the President & CEO of Servpro Cleaning (Calgary) Inc., which he grew to become one of the largest cleaning service providers in Alberta. Fred has served as a Board Member for BOMA Calgary, and has recently become a Board Member for The BOMA Calgary Foundation. He is an active member of the Calgary community and supports multiple programs around the city.
David Hinchey, Senior Vice President, Strategic Development
Mr. Hinchey joined GDI in 2014 as its Senior Vice President, Strategic Development after a 14 year career in the investment banking industry. Prior to joining GDI, he served as Managing Partner of Milton Capital Partners Ltd., an advisory firm providing mergers and acquisitions and capital markets advisory services to public and private companies, where he specialized in the facility services industry for several years. From 2009 to 2011, Mr. Hinchey served as Managing Director, Investment Banking of Laurentian Bank Securities Inc. At GDI, he is responsible for the company’s mergers and acquisitions activities and strategic business initiatives. Mr. Hinchey holds an MBA from McGill University and is a CFA charterholder.
Réal Paré has over 30 years of experience in the janitorial industry. He was also President of the Quebec Building Service Contractors Association from 1989 to 2003, and has been President of the Parity Committee for the Building Services in the Montreal region since 1989. Mr. Paré completed a Certificate in Administration from the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières and was previously the President of Montcalm Technical Services.
Craig Rudin - CEO - Superior Solutions Group LTD
Mr. Rudin joined GDI in January of 2015. He was CEO of the Americas for Asia Pulp and Paper. Prior to that, he was Senior Vice President/General Manager of Unisource Canada and Senior Vice President Business Development for Unisource Worldwide.
Daniel Sklivas, President, Central Region
Mr. Sklivas joined GDI in 2006, and is currently the President of its Central Region division. In this role, he oversees all operations in the Canadian central provinces and coordinates efforts with respect to ongoing corporate matters. Prior to joining GDI, he spent five years at Manulife Financial as a director of facilities and property management. Mr. Sklivas holds a Management Certificate from Concordia University, as well as Real Property Administrator (RPA) and Facility Management Administrator (FMA) designations from the Building Owners and Managers Institute. From 2010 to 2011, Mr. Sklivas served as the Chief Operating Office of Distinction Group Inc., GDI’s direct predecessor entity.
Avi Steinberg - President, Franchises Group
Avi Steinberg is responsible for the management and expansion of the Franchise Group, which includes Modern Cleaning and Steamatic Canada. Prior to joining GDI, he developed long-term growth strategies and led large M&A initiatives for Iron Mountain. He also worked as a management consultant at McKinsey & Co. and founded a college marketing business that grew to reach 3 million students at nearly 250 campuses across North America. Mr. Steinberg holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Management from McGill University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
